The recent U.S. Federal government shutdown has impacted many agencies. However, the federal inspector generals (IGs), also known as watchdog agencies, have been impacted more so than in previous government shutdowns.
Since October 1, 2025, all 74 IGs have been impacted by the shutdown. The impact of this shutdown can be seen by visiting or attempting to visit the websites of these IGs. We researched each of the 74 IGs’ websites to determine how each of the agencies were impacted by the shutdown. Our research was available as of October 16, 2025, and may have changed since our initial research.
IG websites still active
35 IGs have active websites that appear to keep updated information. These IGs’ websites include information such as reports, organizational information, contact information, news, and recommendation status. Why it matters
During previous shutdowns, IG websites were active for interested parties to visit to better understand the IG audits, evaluations, and investigations. However, this shutdown affected many IGs’ operations and ability to provide updated information to organizations and individuals on audits, evaluations, and investigations. Another concern is that the shutdown delays the issuance of IG reports related to audits, evaluations, and investigations of the respective parent agency’s programs and funding.
What to look for
As the shutdown continues, pay attention to the status of each of the IGs and respective websites. The longer the shutdown continues, more public information becomes limited for organizations and individuals to know about the IGs and the current, pending, or future audits, evaluations, and investigations. Also, the threat of reducing government staffing, programs, and fundings will impact the IGs ability to operate in meeting its goals and objectives.
